As one of Europe?s premier golf resorts, both the American and European Teams can expect a warm and luxuriant welcome to this five-star golfing heaven set in the heart of Perthshire. From award-winning cuisine to a wealth of leisure pursuits, Gleneagles offers guests an experience which few in Scotland, or the rest of the UK & Ireland for that matter, can match or even aspire to. We?re going to give you an insider?s guide to Gleneagles and what we can expect from it as a Ryder Cup venue.
It is a well known fact that the Ryder Cup is one of the biggest and best sporting events in the world, the recent unfolding at Medinah certainly lived up to expectations and provided some thrilling entertainment leaving viewers simply awe-struck. Singles Sunday was one of the most remarkable days in sport, arguably golf?s greatest ever event. As we draw our attention to the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles you may well be wondering what to expect from the world Scotland?s most famous inland golf resort and whether it will be able to live up to previous hosts successes?
?
Set in some truly breathtaking grounds and surrounded by stunning Perthshire countryside; Gleneagles is one of the most idyllic golf resorts in the world and a real pleasure to visit. Escape the stresses and strains of everyday life by hiding away at Gleneagles for a few days of golf!

Since the announcement was made, way back in 2001, that the 2014 event would be hosted by Gleneagles preparations have been ongoing and substantial improvements have been made since, most notably to the PGA Centenary Course which will of course host the Ryder Cup match. Just last year the ?Dormy Clubhouse? was re-opened (officially by Colin Montgomerie) after a ?4 million renovation project that has quite literally transformed the golf hub of the resort. The new attractions of the clubhouse include a much wider selection of food including a Tandoori oven ? a must try if eating in the restaurant ? and the Johnnie Walker Blue Cigar Bar ? a new concept for a resort hotel in the UK ? which allows guests to enjoy hand-rolled Cuban cigars in the most comfortable surroundings. Four large heated leather sofas encircle an open wood burning fire, and if that isn?t enough to keep you warm during the sometimes unpredictable weather in Scotland then the heated floors, panels and cashmere blankets should do the trick. The restaurant and lounge areas are fantastically furnished and still manage to provide fantastic views of the 18th holes of the Kings and Queens courses which make for good viewing whilst taking a well earned rest after a day?s golf. Gleneagles is everything you would expect from a 5 star resort but has so much more to offer than its contemporaries, with staff dedicated to making your stay a truly memorable one; in fact the hotel retains one member of staff for every guest staying in the hotel to ensure the highest standards of service possible!

Now on to the important subject of Golf ? Gleneagles has three 18 hole championship courses, a 9 hole par 3 course, a pitch and putt and one of the country?s leading golf academies which includes a driving range, short game area and numerous putting greens. The Event itself will take place on the Jack Nicklaus designed PGA Centenary Course, which hosts the Johnnie Walker tournament annually. A feature of the PGA Centenary Course is the feast of views of the spectacular countryside in which Gleneagles is set. However the course has not been without its controversy with some complaining that the layout was too Americanized but if anything it just adds contrast to the resort and offers a different challenge to the classic James Braid designed Kings and Queens, each of which is in immaculate condition with manicured greens and stunning surroundings. This is what golf is all about. Playing the Centenary course before the 2014 Ryder Cup will give you a taste of what every team member will have to deal with and also giving you the opportunity to say that you managed to clinch a birdie on a hole that one of the top golfers perhaps only managed to par.

Gleneagles is perfect for the whole family as well as an escape for a getaway with friends because golf is not the only attraction for visiting the resort. With activities such as falconry, off road driving and equestrian there are plenty of things to keep you busy away from the golf course. The dining experiences on offer are also unrivalled for a resort hotel, with restaurants ranging from the casual dining in the Mediterranean themed DESEO restaurant to Andrew Fairlies -the only 2 Michelin starred establishment in Scotland. Even if on the rare occasion you might want to travel away for the day this could not be easier with both Glasgow and Edinburgh under an hour on the train from Gleneagles station, putting the resort in a prime location.
?
Andrew Farlie at Gleneagles is the only restaurant in the whole of Scotland to have been awarded 2 Michelin Stars and is just one of the endless top class dining options at the hotel.
?
In conclusion to the question what can we expect in regards to the 2014 Ryder Cup being held at Gleneagles? The Scottish First Minister believes the event will bring ?100 million into the Scottish economy. This should in turn provide a fantastic atmosphere leading up to and surrounding the event and also provide a special and memorable experience for anyone who plays it between now and September 2014. Various changes have been made by Jack Nicklaus as he looked to add additional excitement for spectators and provide a more challenging prospect for the world?s top golfers. This in turn will potentially create some fantastically memorable holes which will put the Centenary course firmly on the map in terms of must play courses and with the title of ?The World?s Greatest Golf Resort? a big claim to make, it can?t be too far from the truth.? With the last two Ryder Cup matches being separated by just a point it is highly likely that Gleneagles 2014 will be a close and unforgettable competition as the event returns to the home of golf.
